Asking for a review can feel like an odd thing to do in a care setting — families are often going through something difficult, and it doesn’t feel like the moment to ask for a favour. But genuine reviews are one of the strongest trust signals a worried family can see, and there are respectful ways to gather them that don’t feel like a sales tactic.
Why reviews matter more here than in most industries
Choosing a care home is an emotional, high-stakes decision, often made under time pressure. Families lean heavily on other families’ experiences to feel confident they’re making the right choice — arguably more than almost any other kind of review a person reads. A handful of specific, genuine reviews can do more to reassure a family than any amount of marketing copy.
Simple, respectful ways to ask
- After a positive moment — a good visit, a settled first few weeks, a thank-you from a family member — is a natural, low-pressure time to ask, rather than a scheduled campaign.
- Make it easy — a direct link to your Google review page (not a request to “search for us and leave a review”) removes almost all the friction.
- Ask the right person — usually a family member rather than the resident themselves, and always with a light touch: “if you’ve got two minutes and felt able to, it would really help other families.”
- Train the team to mention it — a manager or senior carer who mentions it naturally, once, in conversation, tends to get a better response than an email campaign.
Showing reviews well
Reviews only build trust if they’re visible — on your homepage, not just on Google. Showing three or four genuine, specific reviews (not just star ratings) does far more for a nervous family than a generic testimonials page.
What to do about a difficult one
An occasional critical review is normal, and how you respond matters more than the review itself. A calm, professional, specific reply — acknowledging the concern and explaining what’s been done about it — often reassures a reader more than a string of five-star reviews with no replies at all. What to avoid is silence, or a defensive public reply.
